I am sure this is what Syd felt like in Brown Sugar. I am sure that my hip hop appreciation reached a peak last night. And I am sure that my soul was encouraged. Watching DMX and Snoop talk purely and jam out authentically did something to my soul. I know y'all like-what? How, sis? But, from the prayer to the genuine gem drops and laughter throughout, I was touched.
Touched mostly because the music that DMX and Snoop have gifted the culture is a true reflection of God's grace. For me, it reminded me of a two things.
While many things can be critiqued (problematic lyrics written in the early 90s), I would much rather focus on the joy and artistic reflection that exuded from both men. Given the hardships of life each experienced they still were able to stand in a gift that God gave them. And I can't be offended by their perspectives from their experiences.
Their expressions are theirs to share, and I am so glad they've maintained the courage to stand before society and offer their gifts in spite of. They kept it 100 with each other and honor their stories.
I needed to feel that!
